Knots & Barley (garage & workshop)

Nestled at the base of the Eildon Hills, Oakendean Lodge sits within established gardens reached by a driveway that once formed the main road to the neighbouring village.

The existing garage and workshop has been repositioned closer to the lodge, creating a stronger relationship between the buildings and establishing a more cohesive setting within the garden. The design draws on the materiality of the site, with cladding that will weather to a silvery grey, black metal roofing and tall vertical windows framing views back across the grounds.

A proposed transformation of the existing conservatory will introduce a new living space that is bright, open and connected to the landscape. A timber-framed structure with extensive glazing will frame views in every direction, while western light and timber fins will create shifting patterns of sunlight and shadow throughout the day. A sedum green roof and new dining terrace will further strengthen the relationship between the house and garden, extending the living space outdoors.

Together, the projects explore how thoughtful siting, natural materials and carefully framed views can strengthen the relationship between architecture, garden and landscape.
